One of the most enjoyable aspects of ordering
a Tibetan rug is the process of choosing colors
that go perfectly in your interior. Choose from
our rich selection of color options and, if you
can't find the exact color you need, we'll match
your ideal color for free!
A big thanks to Laura Cassidy of Seattle
Metropolitan Magazine for including us in this
month's Best of the City World Tour feature.
We are proud to be part of our city's global
approach to "buying local".
And, speaking of buying local, check out
Seattle Homes & Lifestyles's June 2009 Shop Local section, which features our made-
to-order "Zigzag" rug, available in any size
or color.

MEANING & QUALITY
Be sure to check your mailbox this weekend
for the Spring 2009 issue of Dorjé's quarterly
newsletter. You'll read a personal profile of one
of our skilled weavers, gain new perspectives
on the important relationship between business
and education at DoCo, plus learn how quality
factors into every rug purchase.
The online version of the newsletter will
be available for download here on May 12th
or
through the newsletter download link at
the bottom of this page.
Dorje is proud to be part of this year's
ART OF DINING fundraising event presented
by the Women's Funding Alliance in Seattle.
You'll find many beautiful items such as our
8 x 10' hand-knotted "Stellar" rug (above)
in live and silent auctions. Please join us
and the WFA in supporting the women
and girls of the Puget Sound area!
Our random ikat design (Design Edition "2009.4")
is ready for the floor of this brand new Capitol Hill
condo. The approved strike off shown here is woven
using 100% Tibetan wool with colors blended for
a truly handmade look and feel.
Look for the five-carpet suite, due off the looms
in June!
We've received plenty of new samples and think
it's high time we get them up on the studio wall.
We're sampling away to get the best mix of color
and technique as we furiously work towards the
summer debut of our first program line of rugs.
Passang recently sent woven samples of our current
2009 Design Editions Collection here to the studio.
Pictured above is "2009.9 Tiger" in our warm, dark
neutral colorway. Knotted using a blend of wool
and silk in the background plus a hand dyed abrash
to boot, this design brings warmth, comfort and a
touch of class to your interior space. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
16 hours of power cuts in 24 hours. Every day
of the week. This is how it is in Nepal today.
Strangely, I found that I could live with this
and it's actually better. No blaring sounds of
the TV and stereo to assault my ears or flashing
lights to blind me. I could enjoy the shadows
deepening as the sun set and everything looked
more interesting and beautiful in the natural
fading light.
The press of people was another thing altogether.
It seems everyone from the countryside has been
sucked into Kathmandu. There is a shortage
of water, fuel and space. One needs to learn
to bathe with a bucket of water and save enough
to clean the bathroom as well; use handmade,
hand-operated tools and products out of necessity
and store water in earthen pots, since the fridge
is rendered useless.
As with everything else in this part of the world,
things are at an extreme. But, the situation
seems to have taught people to conserve and
that is a good thing. I hope the world does not
wait until a similar situation is forced upon all
and begins conserving today.

DoCo PARTICIPATES
IN FIRST-EVER SIKKIM
OBSERVANCE
OF
EARTH HOUR
Citizens of Sikkim shut off their lights and
appliances this past Wednesday in observance
of Earth Hour. Small Town Film Club in association
with the Sikkim chapter of the World Wildlife Fund
organized an interactive screening session on the
subject of global warming with school and media
representatives in Gangtok.
Despite the fact that Sikkim is India's least
populated state, word spread quickly and support
for the Earth Hour movement
grew rapidly in
the area's tight-knit community. DoCo was
happy to participate in Sikkim's observance
of Earth Hour. Passang and team switched off
all the lights at 8:30pm and were thrilled to see
a wave of darkness spread across town.
Coming off the loom this week was Nils Finne
of Finne Architects's "Grass" rug. This has been a
stunning project from day one, when we received
the black and white design from Driscoll Robbins
Fine Carpets. Working directly from the original
design concept, we completed a series of technical
drawings which, in turn, resulted in the final graph
used during production.
From architect to technical design studio to each
and every hand involved from the woven ground
up, this project has been a true collaboration.
We can't wait to see this rug in person! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

HAPPY TO REPORT
Passang recently sent along some of DoCo's
kids' school report cards. We are so happy
they have worked so hard this year and have
been rewarded with A's and B's. Sonam met
with the principal who said he was very
impressed with their progress. With the
new school year just beginning, we wish
them the best in their 2009 studies!
Arriving fresh off the plane this week
was a new sample of our Shale design.
Working with Elterman Finer Architects
in New York, we transformed our original
4 x 8' version into a stunning 10 x 15'
carpet woven with subtle striated abrash.
We specialize in made to order carpets
woven to specification, so check back
often for more design studio projects
in our ON THE DESIGN TABLE feature.
A weaver’s tools are key to the production
of a fine Tibetan carpet and like any other
tool they need to be kept in tip top shape.
Passang made the trek down the mountain
from Gangtok to Siliguri to get our team’s
scissors sharpened for the coming year.
